Piotr Ilitch Tchaikovsky was born on May 7th 1940 in Votkinsk and died from cholera in St-Petersburg on November 6th 1893. His father was an engineer in the mines of Votkinsk. He eventually was appointed in 1858 at the head of Institute of Technology in St-Petersburg. Despite the talent that he showed as a young child, Tchaikovsky did not receive any musical education as a child. In 1850, He entered Law school in St-Petersburg, where his family eventually came to settle in 1852. In 1859, he became civil servant in the Finance Ministry. From 1855 to 1858, he took piano lessons with Rod. Eudinger, but neither he nor Lomakine (in the church choir with Tchaikovsky) discovered any form of musical talent. It was only thanks to the young poet Apouchtine and his father that Tchaikovsky decided to lead a musical career. He resigned from the ministry in 1863 and took classes in the Conservatory that had just appeared in St-Petersburg. Besides, his friend Laroche had great influence on him. When he left the Conservatory, in 1865, Tchaïkovski won a prize for his adaptation of Schiller’s Ode to Joy. The following year, he was called by Rubinstein to teach harmony in the Conservatory in Moscow. He remained there for eleven years, and his best pupil was Taneiev.

From 1872 to 1874, Tchaikovsky participated in the “Russian Novellas” project, but composition absorbed more and more of his time. He had the priviledge to meet Jurgenson, a publisher ready to set off his manuscripts. His first published work was a Scherzo and impromptu for piano. His overture Romeo and Juliet was his first great success.

Tchaikovsky married in 1877, but his marriage was unhappy and only lasted a few weeks. He then went abroad (Switzerland, Italy) and ended his opera Eugene Onegin and wrote his 4th Symphony. In those times, the composer became close to Mrs. Von Meek, a rich admirer of his talent who relieved him from all material trouble by allowing him a yearly pension of 6000 rubles. From that moment, Tchaikovsky was either living in his sister’s place in Kamenka, in one of the properties of Mrs. Von Meek (San Remo, Clarens, etc.), in his own house in Maidonowo, in St-Petersburg or in Moscow. Progressively, he managed to overcome his naturally shy personality and became known as a conductor, leading orchestras in all towns of Europe.

He spent winter of 1890 in Florence, where he worked over his opera The Queen of Spades. He received in 1893 the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Cambridge. Nine days before his death, he conducted his 4th symphony in a concert before the eyes of the Russian Imperial Society of Music.

Tchaikovsky is buried in the Alexander Nevsky Covent in St-Petersburg. He had been receiving since 1888 a yearly pension of 3000 rubles from the Tsar.
